Upcoming HIE Integration with the State’s Prescription Monitoring Program

The State of Maine’s Office of Behavioral Health (OBH) has partnered with NIC, designated operator of the statewide Prescription Monitoring Program (PMP), and HealthInfoNet, designated operator of the statewide Health Information Exchange (HIE), to seamlessly integrate the PMP and HIE systems into providers’ clinical workflows.

Leveraging HealthInfoNet’s Clinical Portal and HINcontext Applicationexisting HIE systems that enable the identification and review of patients’ comprehensive electronic medical records, providers will soon be able to return information about their patients’ controlled prescription medications from the statewide PMP as well.

This upcoming integration, with an expected release later this year, is the outcome of many years of stakeholder feedback and marks an important milestone for the State and HealthInfoNet in making comprehensive patient information easily available in existing clinical workflows to providers throughout the state. When successfully deployed, the integration will reduce the administrative burden of maintaining access to multiple systems while simultaneously contributing to improved patient safety.

Organizations interested in learning more about the integration of the PMP and HIE systems can contact Chad MacLeod, Director of Product and Communication (cmacleod@hinfonet.org). As the release of the integration arrives, HealthInfoNet will communicate and engage its participants to provide additional information and important timelines.
